Ensure Your Glucose Target is Accurate

The Glucose Target in a pump or AID is the single glucose number or a narrow glucose range, that you want your pump to aim for when a carb and/or correction bolus is given. This differs from a Target Range that is an ideal range of glucose values, such as 70 to 180 mg/ml, that you aim to stay between as much as possible with ongoing management.

Your Bolus Calculator uses the Glucose Target setting to calculate bolus doses when your glucose is higher or lower than your glucose target.

You can find this as BG Target on a Medtronic pump, Target Glucose on a Tandem pump, Target BG on an Omnipod, or Correction Target on a Loop APS.

A pregnant woman might select 70, 80 or 90 mg/dL for tight management through her pregnancy. A person with hypoglycemia unawareness or who lives alone might aim for a higher target like 120 mg/dL. Pumps also let you set different targets for different times of the day. For example, you might select a higher target at bedtime than for the rest of the day.

Most people on a pump do better with reasonable glucose targets like 90 to 120 mg/dL. If hypoglycemia occurs while using a reasonable target, you will likely want to adjust one of the pump’s other settings.

Let’s next avoid rebounds by getting the right number of carbs for lows.
